Canberra Heritage Rail is always involved in the restoration and maintenance of its rolling stock. As all of our exhibits, both static and in use, are more than 40 years old, the maintenance and restoration may involve anything from a simple coat of paint to a complete, ground up rebuild.
Project 6029 will be the largest operating steam locomotive in the southern hemisphere, and easily our largest restoration project to date. It has involved a ground up restoration, and more than 5 years of work by our volunteers. Due to be back in steam sometime in 2013, you can find a lot of information about the restoration on the project6029 blog.
Other restorations include the restoration of our recently acquired mainline diesel 4468, the planned restoration of steam locomotive 3102 and the ongoing restoration of several of our carriages.
Of course maintenance of our active fleet is always going on alongside the restorations and consumes a lot of time as well.
